In 1966, The Fort Garry Horse relinquished its duties in Iserlohn, Germany to the Lord Strathcona's Horse and took over their barracks in Calgary, Alberta. It was not a fair swap. I had left the Penitentiary Gothic of Kingston of RMC in 1964 and had enjoyed a very good life in Germany with the FGH. The harsh winter climate of Alberta and the puritanical reign of Premier Ernest Manning really were depressing. In 1966 I took up flying and earned my Private Pilot's Licence at McCall Airfield on a Piper Colt. I went on to get checked out on a Cessna 150 and a Cherokee 140. I escaped when I was promoted and appointed Battle Captain on a deployment to Cyprus. In preparation for Cyprus, I took up SCUBA diving and trained in the glacier-fed Bow River in a full wet suit. Almost immediately on my return from Cyprus, I was posted to Canadian Forces Headquarters in Ottawa. The foothills of the Rockies are majestic and the open Alberta prairie has a charm of its own. I would not voluntarily chose not to live there again. The winter is cold beyond belief.
